I enjoy listening to and playing most kinds of music. Studying the classical literature earlier on, gave me a great foundation for developing my technique and tone. The scales and etudes I had to practice as a young flutist might have seemed boring at the time, but I certainly appreciate how they have become the tools that I grab every day from my musical toolbox. Even though I learned how to read music early on, I've always enjoyed the challenge of learning music by ear. I can remember as a kid listening to the radio or records (remember those?) in my room, and trying to play along with whatever was on Casey Kasem's Top 40 that week.
Later on jazz, ethnic and experimental music became more interesting to me. As I began traveling, I realized that the language of music went far beyond major scales and IV-V-I progressions! I am always trying out new techniques and ideas to expand my playing.
I've always been fascinated with the effect music has on the emotional and physical health of people. My friend and harpist, Donese, and I are recording a CD of therapeutic music that is designed to complement and enhance the circadian rhythms that people experience throughout the day. I'm also playing therapeutic music for cardiac rehab patients.
When someone asks me what kind of music I play -- I really don't now how to answer them. I see myself as a musician who uses the flute to make people happy, think, and feel better. I also see it as a bridge to connect people -- whether they're across the street or around the world.
